13.3. FileWave: Install OS Updates.
Apple sends out OS software updates that require a restart. The tech department prefers to give our users an option on when to install this software. FileWave's red sail appears in the main menu when software updates are available.
1. The FileWave icon
The red sail is in Finder menu bar. Your menu bar may look different.
2. Install Software
- Click the red sail
- Click Install Software...
3. The FileWave Kiosk opens
The kiosk opens and shows "All" software updates. The list includes regular programs and OS updates. The tech department puts OS Updates that require restarts here. Note: Installing a program doesn't (usually) require an update.
- Click on OS Updates to narrow your options.
4. Install the OS Updates
- Click Install button on each row to begin installing. You may click more than one install at a time.
5. Installation
The software begins downloading and installing.
6. FileWave checks for running programs.
It's easier if you close all your programs beforehand, but if you forgot or missed any, FileWave lets you know.
- You can go to each program and exit each one manually.
- You can click "Quit All" to let FileWave quit the programs for you.
- NO, NO, NO, never, never, "Delay". It seems more people contact us with issues when people "Delay".
7. Install will begin
- FileWave begins counting down to installation or
- You can click Start installation to begin immediately.
8. FileWave Installer begins
PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE!
- The FileWave Installer will complete unless you interrupt it. Never interrupt it. How long an install takes depends on the update. Start it when you have time to walk away.
PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE!
9. Restart
You'll need to login after the restart.
10. What is success?
An OS update cannot be uninstalled. Hence, Uninstall is grayed out. Congratulations!
